Here is something to consider for your upcoming vacation: a hard-to-miss travel companion from Panerai. The Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Automatic hails from the brand’s historically significant collection – first for a 1916 patent for radium-based powder for luminosity, and subsequently in 1936 with the debut of a prototype for the Royal Italian Navy, making it the first-ever Panerai watch.

Since then, the Radiomir collection has ushered numerous developments, among which is the introduction of the Radiomir 1940 in 2012. The Radiomir 1940 takes inspiration from, as the name implies, a vintage model from 1940 that featured monobloc case with solid lugs (as opposed to the Radiomir’s wire lugs), while still flaunting the collection’s trademark cushion-shaped profile.

And it is this canvas upon which Panerai constructs its latest travel companion, the Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Automatic. A handsome addition to a similar line from 2016, the new version bears all the hallmarks of the collection with its imposing silhouette, and complements it with a stunning new navy dial.

The two-time zone function is right up there with the best: clear legibility for the home time courtesy of a separate hour hand, which works in tandem with a day/night indicator; and ease-of-use with single-crown operation. As for the cherry on the cake, the Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Automatic is powered by Panerai’s proprietary Calibre P.4001, a workhorse movement that runs on two barrels to offer up to three days of power reserve.
