The year 2025 is an auspicious year for one of the oldest watch companies, it also happens to hold the grandest honour as the oldest continuous-running watch company, as it celebrates its 270th Anniversary. In those 270 years, the Manufacture has experienced numerous challenges and just as varied, and witnessed several historical events that have shaped and reshaped the world several times and survived them all with grace. It has even lived through the most damning of them all in the horological world, the quartz crisis which decimated numerous of its contemporaries, young or old. Along the way, it has garnered all the knowledge in the world on the art of tradition of watchmaking, and they have a repertoire second to none from their entire collection over the centuries exhibiting their finest craftsmanship, engineering, innovations, especially their Metiers d’Art and Les Cabinotiers collections. The rest of the family collection are given the same standard of equally fine finishings as their bigger siblings. They are a work of art in their own right.

Vacheron Constantin 222 steel 1977 & Historique 222 Yellow Gold 2022

To commemorate this special anniversary Vacheron Constantin unveiled an addition to the illustrious family of icons, the Historique 222. The Historique 222 debuted in 1977, as Vacheron Constantin 222 1977, it was to celebrate the watch company’s 222nd year and was designed by one Jorg Hysek as Maison’s first sports watch in steel for the Maison, which later evolved into Oversea 333 and then back to Historique 222 in 2022. Today auspicious occasion calls for a celebration of yet another milestone, and the company decided to revisit the 222, which is now given the honour of joining the family of Historique timepieces.

The aesthetics of the latest edition are almost a direct inspiration from the 1977 222 but updated with the tiniest adjustments to reflect the current sophistication and redefined sporty elegance. You will be hard-pressed to pinpoint the difference between the ’77 222 and the 270th Anniversary version, yet you can feel the immediate differences. The 270th-anniversary edition has the inner bezel and none in the ‘77 version is all I can spot. A little throwback, three years ago the company unveiled the revived 222’s Historique 222 in yellow gold, but the current stainless steel is the standard bearer for the Maison.

The Historique 222 has a matte brushed stainless steel bezel with bevelled-edge notches, and it sits on a stainless-steel base that frames a matte blue dial decorated with long rectangular hours markers in white gold filled with off-white SuperLuminova with green emission. The hours and minutes baton hands complement the markers filled with SuperLuminova, for the ease of reading the time at night. A white gold date window display sits at three o’clock.

The watch is driven by the slim manufacture automatic calibre 2455/2 developed in-house measuring a mere 3.6mm thick, the slim theme carried over from the 1977 model, the same calibre used in the previous yellow gold version, it has an automatic mechanism with a yellow gold rotor winding up the mainspring and harnesses up to 40 hours of power reserve. It may have only two hands, but nothing about haute horlogerie is as simple as it seems since it possesses 194 components, equivalent to some complications we usually see.

The handsome, yet sporty and elegant-looking dial with the Manufacture calibre is further enhanced by being housed in a vertical brushed finished noble stainless-steel case with a 39mm diameter, which drapes elegantly around one’s wrist, of all sizes. A little noteworthy detail, a gold iconic Vacheron Constantin’s Maltese Cross sits at the bottom right corner of the case. The watch comes with a beautifully finished stainless-steel bracelet The true hero of the 222 families indeed, the aesthetical package truly reflects its 270 years of Savoir-faire in a not-so-simple but pure beauty superbly. It’s one perfect elegant sporty watch for all occasions.
