Omega Speedmaster and the world of aviation are like they were made for each other since its introduction in 1957. Over the decades, a few special editions have been issued to the US pilots once they qualified, but theirs is a special edition, bearing lots of similarities to the civilians’. And this 2024 Pilot edition is an outstanding and arrestingly beautiful timepiece, a testament to Omega technological prowess and their eyes for aesthetics contributes to its popularity among watch enthusiasts and fans of the brand. What makes it so special? Let’s explore.

The first thing you will notice is it’s a two-counter Speedmaster, second is its plethora of unique details that make it stand a shoulder above all its other siblings. The colour code is something you will notice instantly. The bezel for a starter is made of stainless steel with a black aluminium ring marked with a tachymeter scale with ‘Dot Over Ninety” and “Diagonal to Seventy”, and a “Tachymetre Base 1000” in neon orange. It frames a grained finished black dial with an exposed grey minute track on the flange.

The two opaline sub-dials are where the captivation starts. The continuous seconds counter with a yellow indicator at nine o’clock has a target marker split into two regions, a blue upper and a black lower. And over at the second counter, we see the chrono hours and minutes scale with the short white hand for chrono hours and long red hands for the chrono minutes. The centrally located chrono seconds hand is in matte-black with a red ‘fighter-jet’ tip as the indicator. The hours and minute hands are coated with SuperLuminova with green emission. The large hours and minutes SuperLuminova block markers emit green and sit along the grey minute track on the flange.  All that is to enable the pilot to read easily in the dark. The aesthetics of the dial itself is worth every ounce of desirability you have in your body as a Speedmaster’s fanboy.

If that is not enough to wow you completely, and you need a little more convincing, there is the heart of the matter, the watch is driven by the twin-barrel Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 9900 with column wheel chronograph function and comes with 60 hours of power reserve, certified by METAS for the possessing the highest standards of accuracy, performance, and magnetic-resistance, and it has the Seahorse seal stamped on the caseback.

It is also water-resistant to a depth of 100m.
