Doing their part in saving Earth, two Swiss modern icons collaborate in doing their part
When the name Hublot is mentioned, what comes immediately to mind are high-tech materials and Big Bang. You have every right to do so, for Big Bang is, shall we say the hero of the family, as it is the most desired timepiece in the family. Probably because it has the cheekiest and most fun personality of them all, as we have seen it in many different renditions and just many colours since Hublot mastered the art of fusion.
Frivolity and fun asides, Hublot are also aware of the dire state our planet’s environment is in, and it is willing to do anything it can to help prevent further deterioration of our fragile environment. In procuring a partner to collaborate with in this matter, it doesn’t have to look too far, right within its boundary, is a perfect candidate, though most unusual, but just as effective as any and both have much in common, and the partner is none other than Nespresso.
Yes Nespresso, the complete coffeemaker ecosystem by Nestle. Nespresso shares a similar journey from its first introduction to being a household name as it spun the coffeemaker industry on its head by introducing the gourmet version of the coffeemaker with its very own coffee essence contained in an aluminium capsule. They both shall we say, revolutionised their industry with their innovation.
The collaboration between Hublot and Nespresso resulted in a timepiece that combined their respective savoir-faire is quite spectacular. The watch celebrates the two partners’ commitment to solving environmental issues by using upcycled materials. Instead of using the usual materials for the case, bezel, crown and pushers, the Big Bang made them using 28% of upcycled Nespresso aluminium capsules and seven other materials. Hublot also uses Eco-Titanium (recycled titanium) for the caseback, the container and the buckle for the strap too. The research and development to get the material right took both collaborators a year of working closely.
Using Hublot’s existing odourless rubber strap technology plays a significant role, they carefully infused recycled ground coffee into the rubber strap. The fabric strap by SingTex called Scafe, is made from 100% recycled fabric composed of 5% coffee ground and 95% recycled polyester, leaving them with the scent of coffee all the time. Isn’t that brilliant? Now, who doesn’t love the aroma of a freshly brewed cuppa any time of the day?
The Hublot Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin new alloyed 42mm aluminium case is then anodised in a vibrant green, a colour that is actively trending and a current favourite among watch collectors and fashionistas alike. The green can also be seen on the top skeletal layer that displays all the numerals, indexes and chrono dials, and hands. The indexes, numerals and hands are SuperLuminova coated of course. The eco-friendly green beauty is powered by their in-house manufacture automatic Unico chronograph movement. The year of research and development with Nespresso has paid off handsomely. Their combined effort has made the timepiece superlight and eco-friendly in the process.
