Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II 'Batman': Malaysia Price And Review

Holy Rolex, Batman!

Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II

Let’s get one thing straight. It is Batman’s 80th anniversary year. And the timepiece you see here is the Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II, codenamed ‘Batman’ by enthusiasts for its black and blue bezel in the Caped Crusader’s signature colours. Since it last hit the stores in 2013, could it be more than a coincidence Rolex has decided to march out the updated Batman? After all, who’s to say there isn’t a DC Comics fan or two lurking in the corridors of the Swiss watchmaker’s headquarters in Geneva?

It certainly doesn’t hurt that the GMT function is one of the most practical complications for those who regularly traverse time zones. The GMT-Master II can display the time in two time zones simultaneously: either the local time and the reference time, or the local time and that of an alternative time zone. In this version, the bi-directional rotating bezel’s 24-hour graduated Cerachrom insert in black and blue indicates night and day respectively. The date, visible beneath a Cyclops lens at three o’clock, is synchronised with the local time.

Of note, too, in this GMT-Master II are two elements first seen in 2018’s ‘Pepsi’ release. Apart from the five-link Jubilee bracelet (above) in Oystersteel, it uses the new-generation in-house developed and manufactured Calibre 3285. This self-winding mechanical movement boasts several recently patented components, such as an escapement, a hairspring and oscillator shock absorbers, all of which are made from a variety of high-tech alloys. What this all means is Rolex has once again upped the ante in terms of precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks and magnetic fields, convenience and dependability.

We could carry on singing the praises of this particular timepiece, but we know we had you at ‘Batman’. Superhero milestones aside, there’s always a long waitlist for any GMT-Master II with a bi-coloured ceramic bezel. And just like any bona fide collectible, no one can really give a firm answer why they are so popular (although we suspect the catchy nicknames for the two-tone configurations might have something to do with it). Apart from ‘Batman’, there’s a soda trinity, with ‘Pepsi’ indicating a blue and red bezel, ‘Coke’ for black and red, and ‘Root Beer’ for brown and gold.

So get yourself on the waiting list now because there’s no telling when this elusive Dark Knight will return.
