Over the years, Oris has forged a reputation as the purveyor of high quality, finely-finished mechanical watches that won’t break the bank. One of the most coveted pieces in its repertoire is the pilot watch, whose origins date back to 1917 when limited numbers were made exclusively for World War 1 airmen.

Today, that legacy lives on in Oris with the next-generation Big Crown ProPilot Timer GMT. While still a robust 44mm wide, the updated stainless steel case is slimmer and more ergonomic, thanks to a reduced height. A double-domed sapphire crystal protects the large, legible black dial with Super-LumiNova Arabic numerals, markers and hands that can be read at a glance.

The watch’s star feature is its GMT function, which provides a second-time zone via a central hand indicator with a red triangle tip. Meanwhile, the 60-minute, bi-directional timing bezel with Oris’ signature anti-slip angled fluted ridges allows for easy adjustments. In essence, you’ll be able to track two time zones and time elapsed at once.

Inside, an Oris 748 movement powers the central hands for the hours, minutes and GMT, the running seconds sub-dial at nine o’clock and date at three o’clock.

Of the three straps available, the standout option is the one made of Ventile (above), a weather-resistant woven cotton fabric first developed for the British Royal Air Force during World War II. The olive green shade is the perfect expression of the watch’s rugged qualities. The strap also features a revamped ‘Lift’ seat-belt-inspired clasp.
