New: Ulysse Nardin at Watches & Wonders 2024

Are you ready for the hyperdrive?

Ulysse Nardin Freak S Nomad

When Ulysse Nardin entered the new Millennium, they decided to launch a watch like no other, a watch that is ready to take flight into space beyond time-telling. The watch was The Freak! A watch so futuristic that it was light-years ahead of its nearest competitors in every way possible. Needless to say, it was a great success amongst journalists and fans. Some 23 years on, the Freak, has been through some changes and innovations to make it more relevant and alive as that was the trajectory it was meant to fly, into the unknown, all that without venturing too far from its original concept, one rotating or carousel movement and crownless winding system.

At the recent Watches & Wonders, Ulysse Nardin decided to relaunch its menacing Calibre UN-251 armed with double oscillators with silicon balance wheel escapements made from diamond-coated silicon with a differential automatic winding system with blade technology, the Freak [S Nomad], which we last saw in the 2022 Freak S. For this latest iteration, it is given a monochromatic aesthetics. The Freak S Nomad comes with a 45mm titanium case and locker, with a PVD-coated titanium bezel that frames the dial. A pair of brackets sit on each side of the case with integrated lugs in carbon fibre, and they provide a slight break in monotony with a slight detailing to the case.

The main attraction for the new Freak S Nomad is the disc, and it’s not a dial, Ulysse Nardin designers and the artisanal craftsmen have tastefully added the hour disc right below the carousel movement. The CVD-coated hour disc is an injection of their Metier d’art skill as it is decorated with an 18th-century hand-turned guilloche diamond pattern. Imbue it as a blend of future with a touch of old tradition. They work really well together, as the diamond guilloche gives it the impression that the twin-engine spacecraft is flying into a vortex in deep space, and as the disc turns, it catches the light at different angles, seeming to give the disc a life of its own. Above it is the UN-251 with 70 hours of power reserve. Its ready to take you on a hop around the galaxies in the Universe.
