In 2020, just as the pandemic hit the globe, H. Moser & Cie unveiled an all-new timepiece, the Streamliner Flyback Chronograph with a fume grey dial. The watch company has always been known for its puritanical approach towards its aesthetics, and that is the basic round-shaped watch, which gave the world of horology a huge surprise when they introduced a cushion-shaped or TV-shaped timepiece instead. It was totally unexpected, well almost, as they have been known to unveil prototype timepieces that are outlandish and sometimes downright quirky. Therefore, adding a cushion-shaped to their collections is a surprise. And guess what? It is a rather pleasant change that comes with a surprise. No wonder it was a runaway success.

In the subsequent years, there were other versions of Streamliner, but with different complications. This year, H. Moser & Cie revisit the model with the Streamliner Flyback Chronograph Automatic Funky Blue 2.0. Even though the shape of the timepiece is unusual in the family, there is also that familiarity, especially the large expanse of the fume dial, which reminds me of the simplicity and that pared-down feel, clean and uncluttered. Displaying on the Funky Blue fume sunburst dial are the large hours and minutes hands inserts with Globolight, and the distinctively long and slim red central chrono seconds hand and the grey chrono minutes hand, and they are both retrograde. On flange is marked with the tenth seconds and Arabic numerals minutes, while the Tachymeter scale is on the inner bezel. The absence of the usual chrono counters makes this Streamliner looks refreshingly discrete, like what H. Moser & Cie always stood for.

The 42.3mm watch case is made of stainless steel in this 2.0 iteration, and it has complex language but is superbly disguised with a simplistic feel. The little notches and dents are discretely implemented to accommodate and at the same time emphasise the lozenges-shaped chrono pushers with the crown at four o’clock, and last but not least to accommodate the integrated steel bracelet, which itself is a work of art as it reflects the curved of the sides of the cushion-shaped case.

Housed within this contemporary and handsome athletic timepiece is the sophisticated Calibre HMC 907, the same as the 2020 Streamliner Flyback Chronograph. The movement is developed by one of their partners, AGENHOR. The movement itself is a work of art as well, with its chrono seconds and minutes flyback function reading kept to the minimal, but the mechanism in the movement says otherwise, it is a layer of complexity added to what is already a complicated movement with an exposed column wheel. You will be hard-pressed to locate the automatic rotor, as it is hidden between the movement and the dial and out of the side. It is no surprise as it is being touted as one of the best Chronograph ever designed; a movement for the connoisseurs who appreciate the intricacy of an activated Chronograph mechanism. It is a hypnotic and unassuming beauty.
