An aerobatic icon inspires a high-performance instrument watch built with genuine aviation credentials
For Bell & Ross, aviation is less a theme than a founding principle, which makes this latest Patrouille de France edition a particularly natural fit. The new BR-X3 Patrouille de France takes the brand’s most technically ambitious square watch and dresses it in the colours of France’s elite aerobatic display team. Only 250 pieces will be made.
For collectors, the interesting bit is not the patriotic livery but the platform underneath it. The BR-X3 sits a rung above the familiar BR-03, retaining the signature “circle within a square” architecture while introducing a more complex multi-layer construction. The 41mm case combines polished and satin-finished steel with blue anodised aluminium structural elements, creating a watch that feels more engineered than merely styled.
The dial is where Bell & Ross has had some fun. A three-layer construction blends black, blue and white components to echo the Alpha Jet aircraft, flight suits and helmets used by the Patrouille de France. Look closer and there are plenty of collector-friendly details: a central seconds hand with an Alpha Jet-shaped counterweight, a power reserve display rendered in the colours of the French flag, and the squadron’s signature Diamond formation at six o’clock. Thankfully, the design stops short of becoming overtly commemorative. It still reads first and foremost as an instrument watch.
Powering the watch is the BR-CAL.323, a Kenissi-built manufacture movement that brings some serious credibility. COSC-certified and backed by a five-year warranty, it delivers a healthy 70-hour power reserve and displays the date at three o’clock and the power reserve at nine. In an era when enthusiasts increasingly scrutinise what lies beneath the dial, Bell & Ross has wisely paired the watch’s bold aesthetics with a movement capable of carrying its weight.
The result is one of the more convincing aviation-themed releases of the year: distinctive without being gimmicky, technical without being intimidating, and unapologetically French in character. For collectors who appreciate Bell & Ross at its most authentic, this may be the sweet spot.
