A lunar complication takes centre stage in a sleek new release, blending cosmic precision with cutting-edge Carrera design
TAG Heuer’s latest release takes the Carrera collection from racetracks to the cosmos with the Carrera Astronomer, a striking new moonphase watch that fuses spacefaring history with contemporary precision. It’s a bold move for a brand long associated with motorsport, but one that feels fitting given TAG Heuer’s own legacy in space.
In 1962, astronaut John Glenn wore a specially modified Heuer 2915A stopwatch aboard NASA’s Friendship 7 mission, marking the first Swiss timepiece to orbit Earth. The Carrera Astronomer honours that milestone while pushing the collection into fresh astronomical territory.
At its heart is the new Calibre 7, a mechanical movement offering a 50-hour power reserve and a moonphase complication unlike anything else in the Carrera line. Instead of a single stylised moon, the display at six o’clock uses a rotating disc to show seven illustrated moon stages in crisp, daily increments.
Two slender arrows track both the moon’s current phase and its position within the 29.5-day cycle, advancing at 1am each day in sync with the real lunar rhythm. It’s a technically faithful, visually arresting take on a classic complication.
A 39mm case provides a versatile, everyday fit while offering space for a dial dominated by the moonphase display. Turn the watch over and the sapphire caseback reveals an engraved astronomical observatory and Victory Wreath, underscoring the cosmic inspiration.
TAG Heuer introduces the Astronomer in three editions: a stainless-steel model with a silver dial and black moonphase disc that channels the quiet depth of space; a 500-piece limited edition with turquoise Super-LumiNova accents and a grey leather strap for a modern, high-contrast look; and a refined two-tone version pairing stainless steel with 18K 5N rose gold, also limited to 500 pieces, offering warmth and elegance.
All models feature TAG Heuer’s contemporary “beads of rice” bracelet or premium leather options, linking back to the brand’s 1960s design heritage.
