A luxurious upgrade for this Jaquet Droz chronograph.
One of Jaquet Droz’s standout offerings of 2019, the Grande Seconde Off-Centered Chronograph charmed us with its whimsical display and technical chops. A cheeky riff on the Grande Seconde’s signature figure of ‘8’ dial layout, the Off-Centered version has the entire movement, dial and crown set at an angle, presenting an skewed display that altered watch’s aesthetic into something altogether more dynamic. At the same time, the watch also featured a monopusher chronograph complication – a first for the Grande Seconde collection – endowed with central chronograph hand, column wheel, vertical clutch and silicon balance spring.
While the 2019 models in grey, blue or silver dials with hand-sandblasted and satin-finished decoration emanated a youthful spirit, the 2020 version is endowed with a dressier and more mature vibe.
Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Off-Centered Chronograph 2019
At the centre of the Grande Seconde Off-Centered Chronograph Black Onyx’s attention is the luscious and enigmatic namesake gemstone, from which the dial is carved. Those who follow Jaquet Droz know that the brand is also known for crafting dials from mineral stones spanning aventurine to bronzite, and the Grande Seconde Off-Centered Chronograph Black Onyx is the latest to join a special cast of coveted Jaquet Droz timepieces set with mineral dials.
To ensure legibility, the onyx dial’s intense raven sheen is contrasted with white gold applique and mirror polish finishing on the chapter ring of the time-telling sub-dial, and hour and minute hands, respectively. Elsewhere, hints of blood-red on the ‘31’ date numeral and tip of the date indicator complete the watch’s sleek and sexy disposition.
Like its other Off-Centred chronograph brethren, the onyx version comes in a 43mm stainless steel case. Inside, we gave the Jaquet Droz 26M5R automatic mono-pusher chronograph movement with central chronograph hand, column wheel, vertical clutch and silicon balance spring. Armed with a single barrel, the movement promises 40 hours of power reserve on a full wind.
