Zenith Defy Classic
2018 Zenith Defy Classic with open-worked dial and unistructure rubber strap

Last year Zenith modernised its portfolio with the re-launch of the Defy collection that focused on bold designs and highly precise movements. Led by the Defy El Primero 21, which made its debut in Baselworld 2017, the unique and sleek styling of the watch, along with its high-beat chronograph measuring a cool 1/100th of a second, was a big hit. Shortly after, Zenith upped the ante with the extremely limited Defy Lab, a time-only watch featuring a new super high-frequency oscillator that was truly a sight to behold.

For Baselworld 2018, Zenith brings us the Defy Classic, a time and date only model that seeks to fill a gap for those seeking something simpler within a collection of chronograph complications. To start off, the Defy Classic features a titanium case in the now familiar Defy shape but at a more robust 41mm, alternating between brushed and polished surfaces.

Two dial versions are offered, one skeletonised (above) and the other, a more conservative closed dial. With a blackened skeleton movement and star-shaped open-worked dial complemented by a blue chapter ring, the skeletonised dial version will definitely appeal to those looking for a more showy piece reminiscent of the Defy Lab. On other hand, fans of the more conventional look might prefer the closed dial version that features a classic sunray blue dial.

Both versions come with large luminescent baton hands for the hours and minutes, and a slim seconds hand with an emblematic star counterweight. Offering a variety of options, the watches are presented with a choice of an integrated metal bracelet, rubber strap coated with alligator leather, or a unistructure rubber strap.

Inside the watch is the Zenith Manufacture Elite 670 base calibre that has been modified with the brand’s first ever silicon pallet lever and escape wheel. Should you pick the skeletonised version, you’ll be able to see this 187-piece satin-brushed movement beating at 28,800vph, with a power reserve of 50 hours.

Zenith Defy Classic
Largely seen as an entry model to the Defy Collection and the Zenith family on the whole, the bold design, versatile dial options and robust movement, coupled with a fair price tag, definitely makes the Zenith Defy Classic a popular 2018 offering suitable for anyone. With a slew of greatly executed machines that bear a strong sense of heritage and defining voice, the Defy Collection is really looking to be an exciting range of watches to keep your eye on.
