Swatch FlyMagic: Malaysia Price And Review
Swatch unveils its Nivachron hairspring in a new watch.
Right from its inception, Swatch was the plastic watch with a mission—to help save the Swiss watchmaking industry from being annihilated by the onslaught of the ‘Quartz Crisis’ –a boom period of cheaper Asian-made quartz watches rivalling the time-honoured traditions of Swiss horology.
Just as it was a breakthrough then, the brand has now debuted a new innovation with its latest mechanical timepiece, the Swatch FlyMagic. Sure, it’s not Swatch’s first mechanical watch (that honour goes to the Swatch Automatic from 1991), neither is it a Sistem51 with an impressive single-screw robotic assembly holding all 51 parts in place.

Instead, the Swatch FlyMagic is the first watch in the Swatch Group to premiere the company’s revolutionary paramagnetic Nivachron hairspring, which it developed in partnership with Audemars Piguet. In an age where we handle so many electronic devices in our daily lives, this antimagnetic titanium alloy is an important feature indeed. In addition, the new Nivachron hairspring is also shock-resistant and impervious to temperature changes.

An open-worked dial showcases the movement inside, based on the Sistem51 calibre, with 15 additional components. What Swatch has done, though, is flip the movement around so that it is seen from the dial side. The result of this is that the seconds hand (more like triple prong) rotates anti-clockwise. A transparent oscillating weight winds the movement, giving it up to 90 hours of power reserve.

Available in three versions and limited to 500 numbered pieces each, the Swatch FlyMagic comes in either stainless steel or PVD stainless steel. Each watch comes with one rubber strap and two calfskin leather straps. While there will only be 1,500 pieces of the FlyMagic available, Swatch has said that all Sistem51 models in the future will feature the Nivachron hairspring.
