NEW: Montblanc 1858 Small Second 0 Oxygen

Downsized proportions and clever case engineering sharpen the appeal of a vintage-leaning sports watch built for everyday wear

There is something pleasingly unfussy about Montblanc’s latest take on the 1858 Small Second 0 Oxygen. The formula is familiar—vintage expedition-watch cues, contemporary materials and the brand’s 0 Oxygen case technology—but the proportions have been reconsidered. At 38mm across and 11.7mm thick, it swaps overt ruggedness for a more compact, wrist-friendly presence.

The black lacquered dial keeps things disciplined. Large Arabic numerals and cathedral hands are filled with Super-LumiNova, while a railroad minute track reinforces the period character. A small-seconds register at six o’clock gives the layout welcome symmetry, balanced by a colour-matched date display at three. Around it sits a fixed bezel with a black ceramic insert, its luminescent cardinal points providing a subtle nod to navigation instruments.

More interesting is what you cannot see. Montblanc’s “0 Oxygen” construction removes oxygen from inside the case, helping reduce condensation when the watch encounters sharp changes in temperature or atmospheric pressure. It is a technically neat solution that makes more sense here than some of the grander claims attached to adventure watches. Water resistance is rated to 100m.

Inside is the automatic MB 24.16, beating at 4Hz and delivering around 38 hours of power reserve. The specification is relatively conventional, but it covers the essentials neatly, including hacking seconds for precise time-setting.

The other notable detail is the strap. Montblanc has paired the watch with a blue-black saffiano calf-leather option, complete with grey stitching and a pointed profile inspired by a fountain-pen nib. A tapered steel bracelet with fine adjustment is also supplied, giving the watch two quite different personalities.

The result is arguably one of the more convincing executions of the 1858 idea: compact, legible, technically purposeful and just dressy enough to escape the usual field-watch uniform.
