NEW: Louis Moinet Fuego Nuevo

Honouring Aztec heritage and the cosmic cycle of time in one horological masterpiece

The Fuego Nuevo from Louis Moinet is an extraordinary timepiece inspired by the Aztec Fuego Nuevo (New Fire) ceremony, a sacred ritual that was held every 52 years to mark the rebirth of the sun and the renewal of cosmic time cycles.

At the heart of this creation is the Piedra del Sol, a monumental Aztec sculpture carved in 1479 during Emperor Axayacatl’s reign. This massive stone, weighing 24 tonnes and spanning 3.6 metres, was made to commemorate the New Fire ritual. Today, it resides in Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthropology, continuing to captivate visitors with its rich symbolism.

Speaking of the inspiration behind the Fuego Nuevo, Jean-Marie Schaller, Owner and Creative Director of Louis Moinet, explains, “I have always been fascinated by ancient civilisations, especially Mesoamerican cultures and their advanced astronomical knowledge. They saw the cosmos not just as stars but as a symbol of life’s eternal cycles.”

This vision comes to life in the Fuego Nuevo’s dial, crafted from ancient Muonionalusta meteorite, its Widmanstätten patterns—geometric designs formed over billions of years—laser-engraved with intricate references to the Piedra del Sol. Encased in a 40mm red-gold case, its three levels are enhanced by a ring of aventurine, which adds a mystical allure.

At its core, the Fuego Nuevo houses a flying tourbillon, symbolising the perpetual renewal of time. “The flying tourbillon was the natural choice because its rotations reminded me of the constant renewal of time and infinity,” Schaller notes.

Located at six o’clock where it defies gravity with each graceful rotation, it is powered by the LM135 calibre, designed and developed by Louis Moinet in collaboration with Concepto. The hand-wound mechanism is equipped with a double barrel, or volte face system, that produces a 96-hour power reserve.
