Jaeger-LeCoultre has long set the standard for astronomical complications, and the latest Master Hybris Artistica Calibre 945 is a masterclass in both technical and artistic prowess.
Limited to just five pieces, it pairs a 45mm 18K pink gold case with a midnight-blue Grand Feu enamel dial, hand-finished by the Maison’s Métiers Rares atelier. The triple-level dome creates depth, while a golden ‘Atomium’ lattice frames the dial like constellations traced across the night sky.
At its core is the flying Cosmotourbillon, rotating once anti-clockwise over a sidereal day—23 hours, 56 minutes, and four seconds—mirroring the motion of the Northern Hemisphere constellations as seen from the Vallée de Joux. Suspended only from the movement side, its 73-component titanium carriage and 10mm monometallic balance wheel, beating at 4 Hz, offer an unobstructed view of its mesmerising rotation.
The dial itself is as functional as it is beautiful. A slightly smaller sky chart leaves room for the Atomium to wrap around the Cosmotourbillon, while a sun-shaped pointer completes a 24-hour circuit to display solar time. The seconds scale radiates outward like rays of starlight, linking the celestial theme with practical timekeeping. Each constellation’s position can be precisely set, underlining Jaeger-LeCoultre’s commitment to accuracy and artistry.
Complementing the astronomical display is a minute repeater, where cathedral gongs, silent governors, and patented trébuchet hammers deliver crystal-clear chimes. Hours, quarters, and minutes are articulated with acoustic purity, creating a symphony that mirrors the cosmos above.
The case reflects the same attention to detail: convex bezel, tapered repeater slide, and a mix of micro-blasted, polished, and satin-brushed surfaces interact with light to enhance the watch’s drama. All functions are set via the crown, maintaining clean lines, while the repeater slide on the left side activates the chiming mechanism.
