NEW: Hublot Big Bang Sapphire Sky Blue

If Grand Theft Auto ever ventured into haute horlogerie, this might be the watch waiting in the protagonist’s penthouse

Hublot has been making sapphire cases for long enough that it’s easy to forget how difficult they are to produce. Sapphire isn’t merely scratch-resistant; it’s also notoriously unforgiving to machine. Yet the Big Bang Sapphire Sky Blue makes the engineering look effortless, cloaking one of the brand’s most technically ambitious watches in translucent pastel blue that feels lifted from the neon-drenched world of a video game.

Viewed from a distance, it almost has the exaggerated, hyperreal aesthetic of Grand Theft Auto’s Vice City-inspired palette. Up close, though, the appeal is decidedly mechanical.

The latest limited edition takes the familiar 44mm Big Bang architecture and renders it entirely in polished sapphire crystal, paired with a matching structured rubber strap. Rather than overwhelming the eye, the pale blue transparency softens the case’s industrial geometry, drawing attention to what sits inside.

Powering it is the manufacture Meca-10, arguably one of Hublot’s most distinctive calibres. Introduced in 2016, the manual-wind movement was conceived around its architecture rather than hidden beneath it. Its Meccano-inspired construction exposes virtually every component, turning the mechanics into part of the dial itself.

Most impressive is the 10-day power reserve. Twin mainspring barrels feed a rack-and-pinion display that traverses the movement instead of relying on a conventional power reserve indicator, while the 223-component calibre beats at 3Hz and delivers 240 hours of autonomy.

Hublot has steadily expanded its sapphire repertoire from clear crystal to increasingly complex coloured variants, and Sky Blue feels among its most playful. Producing coloured sapphire with consistent optical clarity remains vastly more challenging than ceramic, making each new shade as much a materials-science achievement as a design exercise.

Limited to 100 pieces, the Big Bang Sapphire Sky Blue won’t be for everyone. Traditionalists will almost certainly look elsewhere. But collectors who appreciate boundary-pushing materials and unapologetically contemporary design may find this one irresistible—a watch that feels as though it belongs equally on the wrist and in a beautifully rendered virtual skyline.
