A travelling companion for sporty globetrotters.

TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 02 GMT

While most fans of sports watches know that the Carrera is one of TAG Heuer’s most iconic collections, few actually venture to understand why. Having made its debut in 1963 as Heuer Carrera Chronograph, designed by the great-grandson of the founder, Jack Heuer, and named after the Carrera Panamericana motor racing rally, the Carrera’s enduring appeal and stature may be attributed to a few factors: chiefly, its unchanging commitment to elevate the motor racing-inspired sports watch, as well as its versatility that allows itself to adapt to different styles and functions.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 02 GMT epitomises these qualities perfectly. At its core, this is a macho chronograph, albeit a much evolved version in a larger size with opened worked dial that emanates contemporary athleticism and mechanical prowess. At the same time, it is also a handy travel companion. Although the dual-time zone feature not typical to its motor sports-inspired origins – after all airplanes and airports are a world away from race cars and the scorching tarmac – it is a demonstration of the collection’s adaptability to modern use.

The ceramic bezel is inscribed with 24-hour markers with the blue half to indicate day and black for night. Meantime, a red GMT hand with a Superluminova arrow-tip hand helps point to the correct home time. The dual-time zone module is built on the automatic Calibre Heuer 02 movement, a column-wheel controlled chronograph movement with impressive 80 hours of power reserve that TAG Heuer developed based on a movement form 1969.

A chunky watch that dominates the wrist with its 45mm case, the TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 02 GMT may look nothing like its more aesthetically subdued forebears. But make no mistake, this muscled-up, new-generation Carrera is every bit the utilitarian sports watch that Jack Heuer envisioned when he designed the very first model.
