Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31: Malaysia Price And ReviewWritten by Leong Wong
A dainty Rolex gets updated in olive green.
At the moment, the size game is very much in play in the watchmaking world, something that an established name like Rolex hasn’t been immune to either. After a decade of ballooning dimensions—in which a generous 36mm is the ‘new norm’ for women—it appears smaller cases are back in favour.
Leading the pack is our current favourite, the yellow Rolesor version of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31mm (Rolesor, for the uninitiated, refers to the combination of gold and steel in a Rolex watch, and has been a signature feature of the brand since 1933 when the name was registered).
At Rolex, where conservatism is the company’s pride and restraint a virtue, the choice of olive green for the dial is on point as it is a perennial favourite with the fashion set yet lies within a familiar colour spectrum for the company.
The Datejust 31mm’s sunburst dial goes wonderfully with its yellow gold accents, such as the hands and Roman numeral hour indexes where the ‘VI’ is set with 11 diamonds. The fluted bezel, winding crown and centre links of the signature Jubilee bracelet are in yellow gold too, while the case and outer links of the bracelet are in Oystersteel, Rolex’s own unique blend of 904L stainless steel.
The watch is powered by the Calibre 2236, a new-generation automatic movement introduced in the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 model last year. It is developed and manufactured in-house, of course, and armed with the brand’s high-tech innovations like the silicon Syloxi hairspring, which is anti-magnetic and greatly improves the movement’s precision.
Like all Rolex watches, the Datejust 31 carries the brand’s own Superlative Chronometer certification, which guarantees excellent performance in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness (to a depth of 100m in this case) and self-winding.
The Oyster Perpetual Datejust is to Rolex what the 2.55 bag is to Chanel: Both have the chameleon-like ability to embrace new trends yet retain a distinct identity. Hence, we say it’s time to make this new 31mm iteration your everyday favourite. A true classic in a new colourway, what’s not to love?
