A Patek Philippe favourite gets kitted out in classic blue.

Patek Philippe Chronograph Ref. 5172G-001

It may be almost a decade old, but age hasn’t dimmed collectors’ enthusiasm for the Patek Philippe Chronograph Ref. 5170. After appearing successively in yellow, white and rose gold, as well as platinum, this much-coveted timepiece has been remodelled in white gold and blue for 2019.

Patek Philippe Chronograph Ref. 5172G-001

For starters, in the Ref. 5172G-001, round guillochéd chronograph pushers (above) have replaced the lozenge pushers seen in previous versions. Secondly, the new, fully polished case in white gold is now adorned with three-tier lugs (below). This subtle vintage touch is underscored by a cambered sapphire-crystal ‘box’ glass that extends across the bezel.

Meanwhile, legibility is the overarching concern shaping the refreshed dial in navy blue. Luminescence coats the contrasting white-gold appliqué Arabic numerals, and white-gold baton-style hour and minute hands. The central chronograph hand has a sandblasted finish. The dial’s tachymeter scale with a white, transfer-printed minute counter encircles the small seconds and instantaneous 30-minute sub-dials at three and nine o’clock respectively.

Patek Philippe Calibre CH 29-535 PS

Beneath the dial lies the Calibre CH 29-535 PS (above), which combines traditional architecture (column wheel, horizontal clutch and manual winding) with six patented innovations. The latter includes optimised tooth profiles, improved adjustment of gear penetration, and self-adjusting reset hammers for an altogether smoother and more efficient performance.

Hand-stitched calfskin strap with Calatrava clasp

The timepiece comes with a matching hand-stitched calfskin strap in navy blue, with a white gold fold-over clasp that replaces the previous Ref. 5170P-001 in platinum.

From its beautiful finishing to marvellous mechanism, the 5172G is certainly worth considering if you have deep pockets and are looking for an investment piece from a celebrated watchmaking master to slot into your already-impressive collection.
