Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Small Seconds Burgundy: Malaysia Price And ReviewWritten by Leong Wong
A show-stopping rendition of a Jaeger-LeCoultre icon.
Forget the bells and whistles; Jaeger-LeCoultre proves simple is best with a new iteration of the Reverso Tribute Small Seconds. Details make perfection, and in this case, who could have predicted a mere colour option would be the proverbial breath of fresh air that this model didn’t know it needed? While not an obvious choice, it certainly was an inspired one.
Although Jaeger-LeCoultre calls it ‘burgundy’, the shade in question is probably closer to the oxblood that one often associates with the upholstery of Chesterfield sofas found in gentlemen’s clubs and man caves the world over. While elegant and masculine, it also has rebellious undertones, bringing to mind that classic signifier of teen angst and counterculture, Dr Martens boots.
In this way, the bold colour choice is the perfect foil to the Reverso Tribute Small Seconds’ clean Art Deco lines. Its burgundy dial with a sunray finish is decorated with silver markers and hands, a white railway minute track and small seconds at six o’clock.
Meanwhile, the stainless steel case, marked with the unmistakable Reverso grooves, is satin-polished to a shimmering gloss. Flipping it over hides the face from view and reveals a plain caseback that could be personalised with a custom inscription. Which brings us to the story of the Reverso and how it came to be—something that aficionados will be familiar with, but still bears noting.
It may not look like it to our modern sensibilities, but the Reverso was one of the world’s first sports watches. Born out of a love for polo in 1931, it answered the needs of British colonial officers who played the game in India and wanted to find a way to protect the fragile glass faces of their watches. With the Reverso, they could flip the case and expose a solid caseback that would then bear the brunt of mallet strikes.
Inside the Casa Fagliano workshop
Fittingly, the Reverso Tribute Small Seconds Burgundy comes with a matching strap, handmade by Casa Fagliano, the famed Argentinian polo and equestrian bootmakers.
