Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 Self-Winding Flying Tourbillon: Malaysia price and review

A clever mélange of old and new from Audemars Piguet.
Almost a decade in the making, Code 11.59 is Audemars Piguet’s collection of the moment that also represents its vision for the future. Hence, the choice of name is particularly significant: Inspired by the minute before midnight, it alludes to the anticipation of a new day. As a result, the 13 references and six models that currently make up this new pillar for the brand all meld the Le Brassus manufacture’s latest innovations with its ‘greatest hits’.
A key design element that neatly encapsulates this approach would be the futuristic case construction. At first glance, the case appears round, but closer inspection reveals an octagonal caseband sandwiched between a round dial and caseback. This niftily executed feature is of course a direct reference to that Audemars Piguet icon, the Royal Oak and its signature silhouette, first seen in 1972.
Another noteworthy highlight is the unusual dual-curved sapphire crystal across the dial. In essence, it is bent on two different radiuses: The internal surface is dome shaped, while the external surface is inflected vertically from six to 12 o’clock. The purpose, according to Audemars Piguet, is to ensure the dial is always clear and legible.
Of all the pieces currently available, the Self-Winding Flying Tourbillon is arguably the best representation of the Code 11.59 range. The gorgeous grand feu enamel dial — rarely seen on Audemars Piguet timepieces of late — and namesake classic grand complication — unmistakable at six o’clock on the dial — are a textbook combination of classic aestheticism.
Beneath the dial, the engine is powered by an all-new in-house hand-polished and decorated manufacture Calibre 2950. One of three new calibres unique to the Code 11.59 line, it is the first movement by Audemars Piguet to combine a central rotor with a flying tourbillon mechanism — as opposed to the hand-wound variety it usually employs in watches of this genre.
While it’s no secret that its launch was met with a mixed response, we believe that the breadth and versatility of the Code 11.59 collection will bode well for Audemars Piguet in the long term. Perhaps the naysayers have forgotten how divisive the now-revered Royal Oak was when it was first introduced all those years ago. In fact, we recommend giving the Code 11.59 a chance, because if you do, it won’t be long before its gems score a permanent place in your weekly watch rotation.
