NEW: Audemars Piguet X 1017 ALYX 9SM

Infusing a touch of fashion into the Royal Oak and Offshore

Audemars Piguet has been affiliated with arts for 10 years now since its first partnership with the world-famous Art Basel in 2013. We have seen over the last few years, art has formed some of their most memorable pieces. This year is no exception, but with a different kind of creative art; the latest collaboration is with 1017 ALYX 9SM. The designer behind the label is none other than Matthew Williams, who also happened to be the creative designer of Givenchy, is also the man behind the brand.
Under the brand 1017 ALYX 9SM, the collaboration spawned four different timepieces from Audemars Piguet Royal Oak collection and the Royal Oak Offshore Collections, two from each collection. If you are familiar with 1017 ALYX 9SM, then you are aware of the aesthetics of the brand, puritanical, avant-garde or cutting-edge fashion; where geometry with clean solid paired down lines plays a big part in its monochromatic or bi-colour aesthete devoid of fussy details, is very much the brand philosophy.
Armed with the brand DNA, the design maverick went on to create some of the most powerful design languages, yet contrasting to many sports watches design codes out there. These four timepieces are endowed with three latest generations of Audemars Piguet family of fantastic movements. Let’s examine the four pieces with three different hearts up close.

Royal Oak Selfwinding is the hero leading the pack, its simple design language speaks volumes. The watch is a piece of golden dream itself, entirely made of yellow gold, except for the eight iconic silver octagonal screws that bolted down the bezel framing a round vertical satin-finished gold dial devoid of markers and indexes, with only the hours, minutes and seconds luminescent coated hands to indicate the time. Adorn only by the applique ‘Audemars Piguet’ across the upper half of the dial and stencilled ‘1017 ALYX 9SM’ on the lower bottom half.

The watch is powered by the latest generation of movement automatic Calibre 5909 with 60 hours of power reserve. They are encased in a 37mm yellow gold case with a matching bracelet and limited to 194 pieces.

Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph is a sportier version with a complex function, the flyback Chronograph, like the namesake. It shares the same simple aesthetics as its automatic sibling. The Chronograph version has two chrono hands and one continuous seconds located at, three o’clock, six o’clock and nine o’clock positions, and the luminescent coated yellow gold hours and minutes hands with the chrono hand are located centrally. The vertical polished satin gold dial too is devoid of markers and indices. Keeping everything simple and clean. Armed with two handsome and sturdy octagonal-based round pushers on either side of the octagonal crown. The watch is driven by the latest automatic Calibre 4409 with 70 hours of power reserve. They are housed in a 41mm yellow gold case with a matching gold bracelet and limited to 202 pieces

Royal Oak Offshore as we know is the more robust and heftier of the two, as it is made for challenging situations and environments, hence their ruggedness. The Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph by 1017 ALYX 9SM follows the same aesthetics as the Royal Oak collection above, but the dial is set deeper and framed by a thicker bezel. Adhering to the Offshore DNA, the applique monogram ‘AP’ is seen next to the date window at three o’clock. The Chrono and continuous seconds hands are located at 12 o’clock, six o’clock and nine o’clock, and the hands have a fuller coating of luminescent, obviously ready for a challenging condition. The collaborative brand is stencilled on the lower half of the dial. The watch comes in two variants, a white gold version and a yellow gold version with 42mm cases, and they are powered by an automatic Calibre 4404 with flyback chronograph function and 70 hours of power reserve, with a matching rotor and bracelet. Each variant is limited to 76 pieces.
