They don’t call Harry Winston the ‘King of Diamonds’ for nothing.

Harry Winston stays true to its heritage with two new models in the Ocean Collection, its showcase for sophisticated mechanical complications, designed with both men and women in mind. This year, the Biretrograde Automatic has been given a sparkling upgrade because what would Harry Winston be without its love of diamonds and precious stones?

You can’t help but be starstruck by the Ocean Sparkling Biretrograde. Ruthenium crystals, used for the first time in watchmaking, bring the dial to life “like sunshine hitting the sea,” as Harry Winston says. The crystalline form of ruthenium, a rare platinum group metal, also has a slightly gritty texture that mimics the appearance of sand.

The white-gold reference features blue ruthenium crystals, while brown ruthenium crystals have been chosen for the rose gold version. Together with the 127 brilliant-cut diamonds set on the dial, this spectacular creation is a symphony of colour and light. But this wouldn’t be a Harry Winston piece if the ‘special effects’ stopped there. The ruthenium crystals also give the movement’s skeletonised gold rotor extra shimmer, a privy treat for the owner to appreciate through the sapphire crystal caseback.

The Ocean Sparkling Biretrograde features two hallmark Harry Winston complications: a double retrograde display and off-centred hours and minutes. The latter, with its signature emerald-shaped gold Harry Winston appliqué at 12 o’clock, dominates the upper half of the dial. Its white or rose gold hour markers are separated by brilliant-cut diamonds, while a chapter ring tracks the minutes.

Flanking the hours and minutes counter are two arcs embellished with brilliant-cut diamonds—one for the day indicator and the other for the 30 seconds counter. Even the date window at six o’clock isn’t overlooked and is paved with similarly cut diamonds. In a final flourish, 67 baguette-cut diamonds are visible on the lugs, bezel and crown protector, whose arches are inspired by the doorway leading to Harry Winston’s Fifth Avenue Flagship Salon in New York.

The watch is affixed to the wrist by an alligator leather strap in a sophisticated shade of brown or blue that beautifully complements their respective dials. It is fastened by an 18K gold folding buckle set with 24 baguette-cut diamonds.
