A siren of the sea beckons at Corum.

Corum Admiral AC-One 38 Automatic

Women who have long-admired the AC-One collection but found it too much of a boys-only club in the past can now rejoice. This year, Corum is making up for lost time with the AC-One 38 Automatic, the first proper ladies’ timepiece from the line that was launched as a spin-off from the Admiral universe in 2013. So, whatever you do, don’t call it a scaled-down version of its 45mm masculine counterpart.

Taking its cue from the successful 38mm adaptation for women of the main Admiral collection that debuted in 2011, the AC-One 38 remains largely faithful to the design DNA of the AC-One range. However, the original proportions of the iconic dodecagonal case have been adapted to suit the smaller diameter. Softer gradients have also been worked into the overall construction.

As a result, the satin-finished case—available in either titanium or 18K rose gold—is more graceful with a slimmer bezel and less chunky crown guard. This is certainly a departure from the rugged qualities of the AC-One 45’s case and its bold integrated lugs, bezel and crown guard. In addition, the AC-One 38’s rubber strap with triple-folding clasp has been moulded with more dainty wrists in mind.

Corum also tweaked its signature decorated micro-rotor for the CO 082 automatic movement that is used to power the timepiece, in order to fit its reconfigured case. Visible through a sapphire crystal caseback, it has a power reserve of 42 hours and is water resistant up to 50m.

In terms of looks, the AC-One 38 will charm you with its feminine wiles. Its white dial with a silver base is decorated with Corum’s unique three-dimensional ‘Grenadier fendu’ finishing. The dauphine-style hands are partially skeletonised and filled with Super-LumiNova, as are the appliqué hour markers encircled by the Admiral collection’s signature nautical pennants, this time in white, for a more contemporary feel. In a final flourish, the bezel is set with 72 round VS-grade diamonds.
